WINCHENDON — Fire destroyed a home at 715 School St. (Route 12) in Winchendon on Christmas Eve morning, according to the Fire Department. No one was injured.

The blaze was reported at 9 a.m. at the home of Matt Parmenter and Jessie Bigwood and the person who reported the fire was advised to make sure everyone was safely out of the building.

When units first arrived on the scene, fire was seen coming from the back of the home, prompting a first alarm for additional assistance. Upon arrival, Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Vain reported heavy fire coming through both the roof and rear of the residence. A second alarm was struck and a tanker shuttle group called to the scene. Tanker service was necessary because the home, located a short distance from the New Hampshire border, is outside Winchendon’s hydrant district.

The Fire Department reported that despite the efforts of firefighters, flames spread quickly throughout the home, which was built in 1928.

Tankers from the New Hampshire communities of Jaffrey, Fitzwilliam, Troy, Richmond, Keene, Swanzey, and Winchester responded to the scene, as did units from Townsend, Phillipston, Westminster, Royalston, and Hubbardston in Massachusetts. Water was pumped to the tankers from nearby Damon Pond in Rindge, New Hampshire, by that town’s fire department.

Firefighters from Gardner, Templeton, and Ashburnham assisted at the scene, and a unit from Princeton covered Winchendon’s Central Street station.

The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s office and the District 8 Investigation Unit were notified, as was National Grid, to respond to the scene. The Winchendon police, dispatch and Department of Public Works assisted with the operation.

The fire remains under investigation and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Bigwood family recover from their loss.
