H.S. Roundup: Athol boys basketball takes down Mount Greylock in Hampshire League North showdown

Since the realignment in 2021, the Mount Greylock boys basketball team hadn’t lost a game in the Hampshire League North.
That changed on Wednesday when the Mounties made the trip to Mallet Gymnasium to take on Athol.
The Bears roared out to a 17-2 lead after eight minutes and didn’t look back, racing away with a 65-41 victory to take sole possession of first place in the league.
“We started out very well again,” Athol coach Brian Patria said. “We were creating turnovers and scoring off our defense. It was nice to see everyone on the team contributing to the victory. Everyone worked hard and gave a great effort.”
Angel Castillo led the way with 18 points for the Bears (7-1, 5-0). Ben Kearney (11) and Aaron Ouellet (10) joined him in double-figures, Ethan Bacigalupo scored eight points while Ray Castine added seven points in the victory.
The Athol JV team beat Greylock, 78-11.
Turners 54, Hampden Charter East 52 — Jackson Cogswell came up with an offensive rebound when the Thunder needed it most.
Tied at 52 with seven seconds to play, Turners inbounded the ball to Branden Truesdell. Truesdell drove and passed the ball to Cam Burnett, whose layup bounced off the rim and out.

Cogswell was there to collect the offensive board and put it home with just 2.5 seconds to go. Hampden Charter’s heave at the end missed, with the Thunder pulling out an independent victory in Turners Falls on Wednesday.
The win was the third in a row for Turners (4-4) – its first three-game winning streak since the 2019-20 season.
Truesdell finished with a team-high 21 points for the Thunder. Cogswell scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, Alex Quezada finished with nine points, Burnett had four points and 11 rebounds, Deven Sloan recorded six points while Dylen Richardson dished five assists in the win.
South Hadley 69, Frontier 60 — Tiger Jack Loughrey gave the Redhawk defense troubles, as he finished with 25 points to help South Hadley pull out an independent win over the Redhawks at Goodnow Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Max Millette and Nico Fasulo both scored 18 points while Owen Babb finished with 16 points for Frontier.
Greenfield 55, Mahar 31 — The Green Wave pulled ahead 35-20 at the half and didn’t look back, cruising to a Franklin County League North win at Nichols Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Amber Bergeron scored a game-high 22 points while Tayler Bergeron tossed in 13 points for Greenfield. Gloria McDonald scored eight points while Anna Bucala and Carly Blanchard each added six points in the win.
Irati Martinez finished with eight points, Nevaeh Scribner scored six points, Thea Whitmore and Hayden Comeau each had four points while Taylor Paluk knocked down a 3 for Mahar.
Franklin Tech 45, Smith Voc 24 — Connor Herzig (138), Madix Whitman (150), Wyatt Whitman (157), Travis Eastman (165) and Dillon Laffond (285) walked away with victories for the Eagles in a win over the Vikings on Tuesday.
