ATHOL – As the last Ice Age was coming to an end and the glaciers that covered North Quabbin receded about 14,000 years ago, they left behind depressions in the landscape that eventually filled with water.

One of those “kettle ponds” can be found in Athol, at the locally popular Silver Lake.

On Wednesday evening, May 27, the Open Space and Recreation Commission met to put the finishing touches on plans to celebrate the attraction that nature created many millennia ago.

The event, titled “Our Waters – Silver Lake Athol,” will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, and feature a number of attractions. These include scavenger hunts, Fire Department demonstrations, pickleball clinics and food trucks. Los Agaves and Pop’s Sweet-Hart Ice Cream will be among those at the event. There will also be fishing instruction and demonstrations in both spin and fly fishing throughout the day for people of all ages and skill levels. No license is needed.

An early morning guided bird walk, facilitated by members of the Athol Bird & Nature Club, will begin at 7:30 a.m. The club will also hold an aquatic invertebrate workshop, provide tips on nature journaling, and host a workshop on exploring dragonflies and damselflies.

Members of the Northeast Houndsmen will also be at the event for demonstrations.

People joining in the daylong celebration will have the opportunity to try their hand at magnet fishing, and kits will be available to sign out while supplies last. The participants who snags the secret prize will get to keep the complete magnet fishing kit.

A water-themed story walk will be led by Planning and Development Director Eric Smith, beginning at 3 p.m. Materials for the storybook “Water is Water” have been provided by Valuing Our Children.

Many other events and attractions are still in the works, so it promises to be a day with plenty to do and see.

The OSRC began planning for the celebration of Silver Lake late last year. The date coincides with National Trail Days and Massachusetts’ Free Fishing Weekend.

Organizers are still looking for volunteers to assist with setup, cleanup, and other chores throughout the day. Volunteers need not commit to the entire day; any amount of time would be appreciated. Those interested in volunteering can reach Smith at esmith@townofathol.org.
