The Blueberry Patch is a cherished part of the Gordon King Life Estate for the public, including the folks with mobility disabilities as well as parents with small children in strollers. This has always been a beloved site in Leverett for many families and individuals to gather, explore and enjoy the bounty of nature.
Trips to the Blueberry Patch is where stories are shared, hands get stained with sweet fruit and memories are made. Every person, regardless of physical ability or age deserves the opportunity to experience this enriching environment. This lack of access from Shutesbury Road has created restrictive changes for those folks with mobility disabilities and parents with toddlers.
The legal easement entrance has become a barrier with “no trespassing” signs and a locked gate. Easements have been used effectively in numerous communities to allow public access while respecting private land ownership. Leverett can lead by example, creating a reputation and showing community spirit is still alive and well. Through mediation we need to ensure the Blueberry Patch remains accessible to everyone.
Even the rabbits are having to hop sideways to avoid the bright orange mesh fence and nailed boards across the easement.
