ATHOL – This year’s Margaret Grazis Employee of the Year Award was presented to Athol Police Det. Sgt. Douglas Kaczmarczyk for his hard work and dedication to the department.

Presented prior to the start of Monday’s Annual Town Meeting, Selectboard Chair Rebecca Bialecki announced this year’s recipient.

“This year’s Employee of the Year Award goes to an outstanding member of the Athol Police Department,” Bialecki began. “Beginning as a patrol officer in 2006, this person was promoted to detective in 2018 and to sergeant in 2022. He has investigated numerous serious crimes resulting in convictions, including the investigation, extradition and arrest of an individual charged with a serious offense against a child. Because of his dedication and hard work, he was able to secure an arrest warrant and, along with State Police, traveled to Puerto Rico and returned the suspect to the U.S. to face justice.”

Now in its 30th year, the award is given to recognize excellence, outstanding performance, superior dedication and positive attitude in the workplace, according to the nomination form.

“Beyond crime solving, this officer is deeply respected within the department, by supervisors and peers, for the following attributes: He is always willing to volunteer when the department needs something, or someone to be at a community event,” Bialecki said. “He organizes the Police Association’s annual charity golf tournament that sends donations back to the community for children’s sporting events, and other items. And, he starts to mentor the younger generation of officers within the department through his thoughtful and professional manner.”

“For these reasons, and more,” Bialecki concluded, “the Athol Selectboard is pleased to present the 2025 Margaret Grazis Employee of the Year Award to Det. Sgt. Douglas Kaczmarczyk.”
